About Us
The choir was founded in October 1999 by a group of music lovers. It assumed the name of Astrolabium, an instrument that was used to determine the position of the celestial bodies. This is because the famous astronomer born in Toruń, Nicolaus Copernicus, is very often depicted with an astrolabe (Polish – astrolabium) in his hand and the choir's Founding Fathers (and Mothers) chose this name to lay emphasis on choir's links with the city of Toruń. One of the aims of the choir's activity is to make our city famous both in Poland and abroad.
Astrolabium launched its activity as a small group of enthusiasts. Presently there are 40 singers, who either study or have a career; some have families and children. There are 8 married couples singing in the ensemble, and in one of the articles about us it was stated that this is the power of the choir. There grows a new generation of choir singers: the singing parents bring their children to the rehearsals, where they learn about music, and sometimes even make critical remarks about our progress.
Since September 2003 the choir has worked under the patronage of the Toruń School of Banking. It has given concerts in all the major concert halls in Toruń and does not restrict its activity to its home city.
